ALL CATEGORIES OF PERMITS

Here is what you can drive depending on your age and your driving license.

AM CATEGORY

For mopeds less than 50 cm3 and carts. Equivalent to the current Moped Safety Certificate, 14 years for carts after a 7-hour training. Any driving license authorizes the driving of vehicles in category AM

A2 CATEGORY - ACCESSIBLE FROM 18 YEARS OF AGE.

This intermediate category allows driving of two motorized wheels with or without sidecar with a maximum power of 35 kW and whose power / weight ratio is less than 0.2 kW / kg. Two years after obtaining it and after a 7-hour training course, it gives access to the A license.

B CATEGORY

For the most widespread category, no notable change, except with regard to the possibilities of towing a trailer (or caravan). If the permissible gross vehicle weight (GVWR) of the trailer is less than 750 kg, no constraint is imposed. If the GVWR of the trailer is between 750 kg and 3.5 T, it is possible to drive a set (car and trailer) up to 4.25 T without special conditions. Beyond 3.5 T for a trailer and up to 4.25 T for the car and trailer combination, additional training of 7 hours is necessary and the mention "96" is added to the license B. If the GVWR of the trailer exceeds 3.5 T, category C1E is required.

B1 CATEGORY

The B1 driving license allows you to drive heavy motor quadricycles. Category B1 obtained from January 19, 2013 no longer allows driving motor tricycles with a cylinder capacity greater than 50 cm3 or a power greater than 4 kW.

BE CATEGORY

This category replaces the EB license, and concerns sets with a trailer GVW of between 750 kg and 3.5 T, and for which the sum of the GVW (car and trailer) exceeds 4.25 T. If the PTAC of the trailer exceeds 3.5 T, category C1E is required.

C1 CATEGORY - ACCESSIBLE FROM 21 YEARS OF AGE.

For motor vehicles other than those falling within categories D and D1 whose permissible gross vehicle weight (GVWR) is between 3.5 T and 7.5 T and which are designed and constructed for the transport of not more than 8 passengers the driver. Vehicles in this category may be coupled with a trailer whose permissible gross vehicle weight (GVWR) does not exceed 750 kg.

C1E CATEGORY - ACCESSIBLE FROM 21 YEARS OF AGE.

For vehicles in category C1 coupled to a trailer or a semi-trailer with a permissible gross vehicle weight (GVWR) greater than 750 kg. Category B vehicles coupled to a trailer or semi-trailer with a GVWR greater than 3.5 T. The permissible gross vehicle weight of combinations of vehicles in category C1E must not exceed 12 T.

D1 CATEGORY - ACCESSIBLE FROM 24 YEARS OLD.

For motor vehicles designed and built for the transport of persons comprising, in addition to the driver's seat, a maximum of 16 seats and the length of which may not exceed 8 meters. Vehicles in this category may be coupled with a trailer with a permissible gross vehicle weight of less than 750 kg.

D1E CATEGORY - ACCESSIBLE FROM 24 YEARS OLD.

For vehicles in category D1 coupled to a trailer whose GVWR does not exceed 750 kg

DRIVING TWO MOTORIZED WHEELS

The driving of motorized two-wheelers is modulated from 14 to 24 years old to strengthen prevention and the fight against road insecurity. A principle of progressiveness is applied by setting stages according to the power of the two motorized wheels (14 years for a moped up to 50 cm3 to 24 years for a motorcycle of more than 35 kW).
